Antifreeze and Coolant

It is somewhat common knowledge that antifreeze and coolant helps regulate the proper temperature within your radiator and cooling system, but did you know that your these fluids also contain specialized chemical additives to keep rust and corrosion at bay?

Your coolant fluids prevent serious and costly damages from rust and corrosion. However, if they're never flushed out and replaced, these fluids themselves become acidic and corrosive. Properly and routinely flushing your coolant system fluids is the most effective way to maximize the service life of your coolant system.

How often should I flush my cooling system?
It is recommended to flush your cooling system every 2 years or 30,000 miles
How will I know if my fluids are still doing their jobs?

Common Cooling System Problems

  • Overheating: Old coolant is unable to effectively help your engine dissapate excess heat, causing your engine to expand and sieze.
  • Corrosion: Most cooling system parts are made from aluminum, thin aluminum, at that! Aluminum is extremely vulnerable to corrosion, so, as old and depleted coolant eats away at this aluminum, small pin holes are formed in your system's tubes. It is out of these pin holes, that coolant leaks, causing your engine to overheat.
  • Clogs: As the aluminum erodes from the corrosion, tiny by-product particles begin to form and deposit inside the radiator. As these products build up, not only will they create clogs, which block the fluid transfer- they also act as an insulator. The more they insulate, the more heat builds up. More heat means more corrosion and particles forming. This cycle finally ceases once your engine overheats.
  • Leaks: As the heat begins to build, the coolant boild more and more vigorously. This increased boiling means more of a pressure build-up. As more pressure builds, the more likely you are to see a failure in your water pump or seals- again leading to your engine overheating and your vehicle breaking down.
