Auto Repair Shop Scams

Many people have an auto repair shop that they have been going to for years and have built a trusting relationship with. There are still a large number of repair shops that prey on new customers and their lack of car knowledge to make some extra money.

There are several different services that auto repair shops may attempt to sell you to put a few extra bucks in their pockets. When you bring your car in to any shop for an estimate, don’t be afraid to tell them that you will bring it back after you have received a second opinion.

Fuel Injector Cleaning

If a shop tells you that your fuel injectors are dirty and need to be cleaned in order for the car to run better, they are pulling a fast one. Gasoline has different components that it is comprised of that help keep your fuel injectors clean.

Although fuel injectors do not need to be cleaned, it is standard that they may need to be replaced about every 40,000-50,000 miles.

Replacing your Air Filter

An auto repair shop may attempt to sell you a new air filter during every oil change visit. Agreeing to this replacement is most often a waste of money if it is replaced more than once a year.

Keep track of repairs and replacements so you have the knowledge of when your air filter may actually need to be replaced.

Talking the Talk

Auto repair shops often try to sell you more services when you take your car in for a different purpose. This is their attempt at padding the bill. They make also try and make you feel like you are neglecting your car if you do not get the extra work done.

Do not feel pressured to take them up on their suggestions. Take their advice into consideration and get a second opinion. The more knowledge you have of your car and its routine preventative maintenance, they better off you will be when going to a new shop.
